Recently, I had the pleasure of joining the hosts of Global Cannabis Intelligence to discuss the dynamic and rapidly evolving cannabis landscape in Latin America.

Access to Cannabis Medicine in Latin America

One of the most significant developments we discussed is the progress we’ve made in patient access to cannabis-based medicines. In Colombia for example, the government has taken a landmark step by including plant-based medical cannabis products in the mandatory health insurance system. This means that prescription fees and clinic costs are now covered, making Colombia one of the few countries in the world to offer such comprehensive access—alongside Israel and Germany. As a result, patients can now receive cannabis medicines as they would any other prescribed treatment.

This achievement is the result of years of advocacy, research, and collaboration between medical professionals, patient groups, and policymakers. Our goal has always been to ensure that patients have safe, regulated, and affordable access to cannabinoid-based therapies, guided by the same rigorous standards applied to all medicines.

Education Initiatives for Doctors and Patients

Education is at the heart of what we do. I am passionate about training both healthcare professionals and patients on the responsible use of cannabis medicine. As President of the Colombian Medical Cannabis Association (ASOMEDCCAM) and as a professor at the University of Panama, I help lead scientific programs and certification courses on medicinal cannabis for doctors and healthcare practitioners across Latin America.

We emphasize evidence-based education, ensuring that doctors are equipped with the latest research and clinical guidelines. For patients, we focus on demystifying cannabis medicine, providing clear information about its benefits, risks, and appropriate use. This dual approach fosters a culture of safety, efficacy, and trust within the medical community and among those seeking alternative therapies.

Collaboration Between Business and Medical Communities

The success of medical cannabis in Latin America is due in large part to the collaboration between the business sector and medical professionals. By working together, we are able to develop high-quality products, establish research protocols, and advocate for policies that prioritize patient well-being. As co-founder of Medicann IPS Medical Cannabis Clinics in Colombia, I’ve seen firsthand how this synergy leads to better outcomes for patients and advances the field as a whole.

Looking Ahead

The Latin American cannabis landscape is changing rapidly, driven by research, education, and a commitment to patient care. I am honored to be part of this movement and look forward to continuing our work—expanding access, advancing education, and fostering collaboration across borders.
